What Soulbound: Online Is & How It Plays
The setting, the core loop, and how the overworld and dungeons feed into each other.
Setting & Premise
You wake with no memory inside a digital world under threat from the Anima, a collection of malevolent entities. A robotic companion pulls you to safety, and as a Pioneer you're tasked with uncovering the truth behind the Anima through environmental storytelling and a main questline, alongside side quests scattered across the shared world — the community wiki refers to this virtual world by the name Dreamscape. Story choices run through a choose-your-own-adventure-style dialogue system: decisions you make in conversations can alter events, unlock secret quests, and shape which NPCs ally with you. Steam's own feature tags for the game confirm "Choose Your Own Adventure" as an official category.
Two Halves of One World
Soulbound's tagline — "Fight Together. Die Together. Loot Forever." — sums up its structure:
- The Overworld: a shared, mob-free space where thousands of players farm, fish, cook, gather, craft, quest and trade side by side. Confirmed skills include Combat, Foraging, Mining, Fishing, Hacking, Cooking, Crafting (Fabrication), and Gearforging (Smithing) — each with its own EXP pool. Cooked food restores stamina or adds combat bonuses, gathered materials feed crafting, and Gearforging turns raw materials into the weapons and armor you take into dungeons.
- Skill-based, not kill-EXP, progression: Soulbound doesn't use a general character EXP bar. Instead, your progression is measured by average gear level, individual skill levels, and permanent upgrades — see our Leveling Guide for the full breakdown.
- Dungeons: instanced, arena-style roguelite runs for solo play or 3-player co-op. Every floor reshuffles encounters, hazards and loot, with storm-spawned mobs and procedurally-escalating boss phases. Death means full bag-loss, though permanent meta-progression carries between attempts.
Classless Character Building
There are no fixed classes. Instead, you swap your entire role by swapping gear — tank on one run, ranged DPS on the next, all on the same character. See the Builds & Abilities page for the full breakdown of abilities, relics and weapon archetypes.
Gear & Cosmetics
Gear serves two separate purposes: stats and appearance. Cosmetic slots are separate from stat-bearing gear, so collecting hand-animated pixel-art armor sets, rare cosmetic drops, and companion pets never forces a trade-off against build power.
Economy & Social Features
Trading between players is in from the start, with an auction house and guild support confirmed but not available at Early Access launch — SpiderWare has said both are coming later. Parties, co-op dungeon finding, and leaderboards (in-game and via Steam) are part of the core loop.
